Another burr under the Capt's saddle......
Remember horses roamin free in areas now Ocean Sands/Whalehead/Corolla??
They'd siesta under cottages during hot part of the day.
Frequently bumped into them (and I mean literally) on the beach on foggy mornings. Be talkin to Mrs' Capt when "bam" bump right into horse. Yes, was the good old days.Around 1995 a group who knows "best" whats good for the horses, penned them behind fence above Ocean hills. Main reasons cited were things like horse deaths on 12, and getting into garbage cans.(Hmmmmm, now they are hit on 4WD drive beaches and poisoned by tourists).
A herd (called harems) that didn't like the fence kept comin round it via the sound. So they were shipped to Smithfield NC. Rogues were sent to Dews Island over the years.
Now if you want to see horses north of the fence you have to have 4WD or sign up for a "tour". (Btw, preservationists not happy w/ tours chasing down the horses). Or, can visit pens up by the lighthouse where if you're lucky you'll see one or more that are under medical care.
Horses north of the fence now total 60 - 100. Depends who you believe.
Saw a comment recently that referred to horses as feral animals. Never thought about that.
In a nut shell, there's always a group who knows whats "best" for others. HI is not alone!!!!!!
