from the beach you could potentially get schools of bluefish chasing bait up there in addition to the ususal bottom fish.
As for something to do with your kid, I would recommend looking into the Country Girl. Its a headboat that goes out deep drop fishing for tilefish and black sea bass. Have always had a great time on that boat. Runs about $110/person or at least thats what it was two years ago when I went. Another option is to check with Oregon Inlet and see if Sarah Gardner on the Fly Girl has any openings for a half day. A trip with her will set you back about 400 i believe but its totally worth it.She's an amazing captain and does great with kids(both the little ones and us big kids). I cant possibly say enough about how great a time you would have with either of these two options. They have great people running the show and I've never come back without having caught a fish.
