I've helped people unhook skates after seeing them struggle with the skate for awhile. My way for the skates is flip them over by the line and most importantly take the hook out while pushing back on the hook the entire time, the hook will come right out. I grab the skate by the end of the tail with the pliers then carry and toss it back in the water. You have to be careful of the little horns all over the skate's back because if you cut your hand it can take awhile to heal and leave a scar. The bigger rays I move them by hand on the wing and watch the big barb at the bottom of the tail. I use the longer 8 inch needle nose pliers with a very narrow end for small size fish mouths which are hard to find. The one I use is a cheap stainless with a red plastic handle by Manley with a black nylon holder, I filed the pliers a little to close all the way for small wire hooks. I like it better than the heavy high dollar pliers.
