Remember..."Everything changes - and nothing for the better."
Darn shame for sure. Can remember northern beaches e.g., Whalehead where there were only 4 - 5 houses on each block. On foggy mornings it was nothing to bump into a horse on the beach...and I mean literally - smack in the face.
Remember the 1st time we saw the "crab" coming from waaaay out toward the beach at the Research Pier in Duck. Visitors had no idea what it was. Eerie sight from a long distance.
You're right, w/ every year came more and more "civilization", less civility and fish. The norm for early morning surf then was a mixed bag of 50.
We finally bailed south about 12 years ago. About the last memory was watching the horse "lovers" whipping the ponies into trailers on and off for several weeks. That was truly a sad sight. Now w/o 4 wheel drive you get to go to Corolla and if you're lucky see one of the advertised wild ponies in a pen!!
Remember Corolla Village when it was home to just a few locals, and the lighthouse??
Whalehead Club grounds were really special then too. No fee, no bustle, no trash, like a little ghost town. Kids loved to explore, crab, and picnic. Often walked around inside the Club. Anyone w/ a key would let you in. Could almost hear ghost voices and music. Remember when they platted out the grounds for cottages?? One of the 2 pics we have here at home is of the Club, as it was in the early 80's. The other pic of course is "Serendipity", before the move and restoration.
