When there is a spot run and the cleaning tables are busy it's always a good idea to put a spot head on a fish finder rig right beside the cleaning tables and fairly close to the pier. Even more so if people have been catching spots off of the same pier for a week or so.
Use a stout rod and reel with plenty of line and a good strong leader with at least a 4/0 hook or even a 6/0. I've caught stripers , drum and several different species of shark. You'll catch big rays and skates too , but the chance for a big striper or drum is worth a trash fish or two. Be sure to set your drag light and make sure your rod is resting on an eye so the line can pass freely through the guides. I've seen some close calls where people almost lost their rods.
I used to set up just across from the cleaning tables on two or three piers I used to fish. When spot are running you can catch them on the north side while you listen for the bait clicker behind you...
