I've been melting the end for awhile on knots, I cover the line and knot between my finger and thumb when I melt it to keep the flame off. What happens sometimes is if the knot slips the melted blob will save it but if the knot isn't retied the melted blob will pop off and the knot will unravel leaving you with a little curly thing at the end of the line.

I tried that one or something similar awhile back and had that happen. So what I'm saying is the melted blob isn't strong enough to use as part of the knot because it always pops off eventually if you don't retie the knot. Nick at Breakaway might be retieing often and not have noticed it.
