Rick is right about the water temps and zoo. It usually starts to drop from the upwelling somewhere just south of Rodanthe on northward, sometimes it's further south. You can call Avon Pier from Nags Head it's not long distance and find out what is going on or maybe the best times. The surf forecast has the water temperature for Avon Pier, seems to be a lot warmer.
