Been fishing the pier and sound for 35 years (now 44) and never have used anything more than 10 pound test. You can throw farther with lighter line and get to water other people can't fish with heavier line. I use a 7 foot medium action ugly stick with an Okuma Baitrunner reel for the pier and my bass rods in the sound for Puppy drum, flounder and trout. A nice puppy or or big trout or flounder are a blast on light tackle. Good luck.
