Welcome to the board!
If you plan on fishing for Kings I would suggest using two rods. One to throw your anchor line and one to use as a fighting rod.
I use a 12 footer to throw my anchor. You can use spinning or casting gear for an anchor rod. I prefer casting , but that's just me.
I have a 9 footer that I like for a fighting rod because it has a lot of backbone and has always worked well for me. Some people like 12 footers and I've seen some use 6-7 foot boat rods. For me the biggest concern with a fighting rod for kings is line capacity. A big king can easily pull 250-300 yards of line during it's initial run , so I've always used casting gear for my fighting rods. You'll also want a rod that is strong enough to steer the fish away from pilings when you get him in close.
Somebody might have a link to a good article about king fishing from a pier. If you have any more questions post them and I'll try to help. Most of the tackle shops are helpful too , so keep that in mind when you go.
Good luck!
