Shortest cast?

Crazy question, but one I think about while surf fishing. What is the shortest cast in the surf that was thrown short on purpose that resulted in fish being caught, what did you catch, on what, and what time of year? I know it is a lot to ask, but I often wonder if I should be casting closer instead of testosterone kicking in and telling me launch it. Thanks! I will be down there in two weeks and will be sure to post reports if I have internet access. Think I have any chance of a puppy drum that far north?
