jlmann, there are times when the crabs have more muscle (meat) than others. During the spring run they usually have more muscle and will feel dense or heavy for their size. They are called fat crabs at this point. There is a very big difference betweeen a fat crab and one that isn't. This usually happens again during their fall run.

Moon phases do affect crabs. They tend to moult or shed during full moon phase. This is the time to find "peeler crabs". Peelers shed their shells, come out soft, absorb some water, grow a little bigger and form a new shell. This is the timt to harvest soft shell crabs. I hope this helps clear up any confusion.
