As far as the setups being varying and complex , I have three basic rods that I generaly use in the surf.

1: Medium sized spinning for casting artificials Fireline tied to 18-24" 40 lb. fluorocarbon leader with Albright knot.

2: Large spinning outfit for bottom fishing. 20 lb Big game tied to a "double" or "triple" bottom fishing rig with a 2 or 3 ounce pyramid sinker and ( I think) #2 or #3 flicker snelled hooks ( the ones with the spinner blade and several beads). This is the rod that ends up catching most of the fish. Mainly I catch pan fish like spot and croakers , pompano etc. A few of these fish always end up being used as bait , the rest are good eating!

3: X-Large spinning or casting ( I use casting gear for this) Needs to have a high line capacity. I use this rig to fish a " fish finder " rig which is basically a sinker slide on the main line , behind a swivel with 40 lb. leader and a BIG hook. Put a 2 or 3 ounce sinker on the slide , a spot head on the hook and throw it in a fishy looking spot. This is normally what will pull bigger fish.

Hope this helps. Please don't take this as the only way to fish in the surf , because everyone does things a little differently and maybe some of the regulars on this board can offer you some better advice.

On a side note , if you Google "reading the beach surf fishing" there are several good sites that explain how to find sand bars and breaks etc. It would be worth your while to check it out!

Good luck!
