In Response To: Line: color, weight, construction... (Jamie)

I always use braid on a medium sized spinning rod ( think bass rod ) with a 18-24" 40 lb. fluorocarbon leader to cast gotcha plugs or spoons to bluefish and spanish mackerels.

For bottom fishing I use 20 lb. berkley big game. A lot of it is a matter of personal preference so I would suggest using whatever you are familiar with and trust. You might want to use a little heavier line because you will be throwing 2,3 or even 4 ounce sinkers , or you could always tie a shock leader on your bottom fishing pole. I tend to avoid braid for my big surf rods , because they hold a lot of line and I've never been a fan of using backing of any type on a spinning or casting setup.

As far as color , I have used clear ( not clear/blue fluorescent ) and low vis green with equal success.

Hope this helps and good luck!
