What temperature do you need for the trout to bite?

A few years ago a friend and I got nostalgic and went up into the mountains about mid April. We spent the day crawling through the Mountain Laural to fish all the native trout streams we used to fish when we were younger. We spent the better part of a day with only one native brook to show for it. Met another friend for dinner and he told us those trout wouldn't be biting till late May early June. I never did find out if there was any truth to it.
