We usually use #1 and only switch down to #6 for the little bait stealers. I don't want to take too many hooks that I'm not going to use.
When were fishing for catfish in the river we go to either 1/0 or 2/0 and sometimes a 3/0 at night. Then again catfish mouths are a lot bigger than most that's caught from the sound or surf.
