Assuming w/ kids you are goin for #'s...not size.

This Capt and crew do fish finder rigs w/ #1 hooks directly attached to steel leaders attached to the rigs. Use no mono.

Have had em bent a few times but never broken. Hooks too big and you'll miss a lot in the surf.

Suggest you get to surf prior to sunrise and/or after the visitors leave the beach at dinner time. Forget the tide charts, tips and reports from tackle shops (mostly bogus anyhow). Get out there every moment you can while the beach is clear of "visitors".
