my dad used to keep a couple of extra hives around. the neighbors would call him when they had a swarm in a tree or big bush. he had a sprayer with water in it. he would spray the bees, then cut the branch and put them in a big white cloth bag he had. he set up the hive and laid down a white sheet in front and shake the bees off the branch. then he would watch for the queen and try to get her in the hive. if she went it all the bees would follow. bingo a new hive. the hive had mostly worker bees. there were drones also and their job was to mate with the queen (so she could lay eggs) after mating the workers would kill the drones.
