I don't plant tomatoes until the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees. Less than 50, they live ok but are stunted..just won't grow. Lowes told me the reason they get plants in so early is because the customers ask for them because they are so anxious to plant. I check soil temp with a meat thermometer.
