Days of the simple are gone. Now rentals have to be plush for "visitors".
While not as simple as what you describe, remember 1st rental in 1980 in Duck, on Olde Duck Beach Rd. Oceanside (about 300 ft. from beach.) 1st vacation ever for this Capt's family. Shared 4 bedroom w/ another family. $375 a week. Realty (now gone) brochure had drawings of houses not pictures. No TV, no radio, no phone, no restaurants. Kids learned to surf fish, crab, find sand dollars by the bucket. Blue/yellow blow up canvas rafts were the rage for kids. Board games after dinner. Stars at nite would dazzle. Sand dunes all over the place - unspoiled. Horses under your house and on the beach. Only gas at Wee Winks - 1 pump. Only phone available was there too. Would walk there some nites for ice cream. Outside shower faced street w/ no door - open to the street. No locked doors on houses or cars. Kids could take flashlight and chase crabs at nite w/o parents worryin. Only about 5 houses on the street. Had chance to buy cottage on the street but passed as wasn't financially feasible.(Part of which was that Mrs. Capt would never rent to others and see her place trashed - as all eventually are).
This year will be #37 in a row for the crew, which started as 6 and are now 17. In all those years, w/ marriages, grandchildren, etc., not once has a family member missed bein there. Better than Christmas to all of them.
Still those first years, the simplest, were "the" best years, w/ memories that'll last forever.
