It was done to protect civil war battle fields in other areas and everywhere got included in it, they enforce the law there by taking them.

You can metal detect in Nags Head and on north, the best zone to find something on a normal day is up high where most people sit for coins.

For gold you want to be on the lookout for pockets of fishing sinkers.

I've talked to a construction worker that found a gold Spanish dagger handle and a couple of gold coins with it under the old wood Jennette's Pier.

The new pier has metal in the concrete pier pilings and sets the detector off if you get near them.
