Tomato And Pepper Update

Just an update about my tomatoes, peppers and yard critters.

I was wondering how your tomatoes are doing? I gave two full dinner plates of purple, yellow and red tomatoes away this weekend to some part time neighbors and they ate all of them in one day, said they had them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I ended up with a bunch of red Champion tomato plants this year and they have been doing really good here, they have been producing a load of tomatoes with lots of blooms still around their tops. The tomato sizes range from small to big but have been very tasty. I hadn't grown those tomatoes before, somebody gave me a container pack with a bunch of multiples growing together that I sorted apart. A berry farm in Virginia was giving them away free for buying stuff there.

I've also been getting some nice looking yellow Lemon Boy and Purple Cherokee tomatoes. The purple ones don't keep long, about two days left out. I got those from the nursery on Woods Road in Kitty Hawk Village.

I've been dicing a lot up for the freezer putting it in plastic ziplock bags with the juice for this winter.

I got another one from there a Sweet 100 red cherry tomato plant that's doing good too and still has lots of blooms. I wished now I had got more of those plants to put up a bunch of them.

My favorite was an heirloom kind called Mr. Stripey that came from Home Depot in Kitty Hawk. That's a sweet solidly yellow tomato with red stripes inside it. I knew from having it in the past they don't have very many tomatoes and I only got eight big ones all at once. Of course something ate 3/4 of four of those near the bottom at night right before they were ready, not sure what that was just singled that plant out and hasn't been back. I still have it and the plant looks good but no tomatoes or blooms. The fox hasn't been messing with them, maybe a possum or raccoon passing through. The deer took off after Hurricane Arthur, a lone baby showed up a couple of weeks ago and fortunately has been more interested in the yard grass and wild honeysuckle vine leaves. I think somebody dropped the baby off here, it was smaller than a big dog and is growing real fast much larger now.

Anyway I had some more odd ball tomatoes like Heinz heirlooms and some wilt resistant tomatoes developed by the state that I bought to try and some produced good and others didn't from the same kind, their not blooming right now so that might be it for them. A plant that came up by itself seems to be the best medium size producer, might be from a rotten Food Lion tomato I threw out there earlier this year for the animals.

The cayenne and jalapeno pepper plants are fully loaded as usual, cayennes are really hot and the jalapeno I got this year turned out not to be hot it's almost like a sweet pepper and that's after turning red. The yellow bell peppers I got turned out to be those orange bell peppers like at the grocery store, they have done alright taller than expected 3+ feet.

I did some hot fish peppers and hot purple jalapeno peppers from seed, I was a little late starting and they haven't got full size yet. I didn't see any at the stores this past spring.

The marigold flowers that I put out there to keep the bugs away are really drawing in the bumble bees so far I haven't been stung, constantly on and flying around them and the cherry tomato blooms must be a hive somewhere in the area.
