I use 10 or 12 a lot for my lure rods. It casts so much better. Just use a 18" leader of 40 or 50 to keep from getting bitten off.

If you're using bottom rigs , put a 40 pound shock leader on it. the length of the rod , enough to tie your rig on and cast it and at least 3-4 wraps around the spool , so you'd want 10 or 12 feet on a 7-8 ft rod. I use Albright knots to join the line , never had any trouble if they are tied right. With light line , you'll lose rigs on the cast if you don't. You can play the fish with light drag.
