Sound Fishing Advice

I've been coming down to the Banks for years and have always looked forward fishing in the surf. This summer things are a bit differnent, I'll be with the in-laws and my two nephews, 7 and 9. I want to bring my 18' bowrider down to put over in the sound. We'll be staying in Corrolla. Any advice as to where I can put in, fishing techniques, what to expect, etc? With the young'uns I'd prefer consistant action for smaller fish over chasing the big ones. Croaker, perch, etc.
It looks like there's a boat ramp at Whale Head but it sounds a bit dicey for a boat my size.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
