Down in Ocracoke this summer just killing time. No wind, hotter than "you know what". My wife had a live mullet on her trout rod just to be doing something. The heavy rods were still in the rack and not expected to come out. I saw a little motion, like maybe she had a fish but that little motion turned in to the rippin-est run I ever saw real quickly. In maybe 15 to 20 seconds whatever it was ran off about 100 yards of line and never slowed up. It then did a move running down the beach slightly which gave us a moment to calm the heart and think about what to do next. Put as much drag on as I though the line would stand. It took off again and cleaned the spool. Gone! What a disappointment! That was the biggest catch we never made!
Any ideas on what it may have been. For what it's worth, no one as catchin' anything in the area and we fished there several hours more with only a very few small blues being landed.
