If you don't mind...some info.

Here on North Coast was never a problem after adding "round" sand. Yes "round". Not mortar sand as it binds w/ itself bein flat sided. No joke. Just threw about 1" over the planting row and turned over soil to about 6".

Always used Danvers Half Long type. Many carrots 3" across at top. Usual length 6". Taste and aroma can't be beat. (Some of them can be quite obscene in shape too).

And...w/ 3-4" of mulch over top able to harvest all winter, even w/ lots of below zero temps.
