Looks like this will be my last trip to the OBX thanks to the economy. My son and I fish the surf and will be about a block north of Avalon pier. This is the earliest we've been down and we're not sure if baits change or not. We'll be down in about 3 weeks.

We normally bottom fish with cut bait because that's the only thing we've had success with. Is there any use in pitching crank baits or spoons? We'd like to try for the small cobia being reported occasionally but we're not sure of the rig?

Any help would be appreciated.
