It is a Largemouth/Smallmouth tournament , but SML will always be known as a good Striper fishery. It's hard to shake a reputation for 40 pound fish :)
As I understand the SML Striper stocking , they stock true Stripers which are capable of breeding - but they aren't successful during their spawning attempts. There were special regulations on a creek that has a big run of fish in the spring to allow them a chance to spawn , but it hasn't worked out. The only successful spawns I know of are between Stripers and White Bass , which makes a hybrid that is sterile. These are rare as a natural occurrence in SML , but they are widely stocked elsewhere.
I was thinking they stocked true Stripers in Lake Anna too , but I may be mistaken. The hybrids have broken stripes and a weird "forehead" above their eyes that is from the genes of the White Bass. I think they top out around 8-10 lbs on average , though bigger fish have been caught. If you look at a 10 pound Striper vs. a 10 pound hybrid there are noticeable differences , mainly the broken stripes and their shape , which is generally shorter and more football shaped in the hybrids.
A tournament I fish every year has started having a category for Stripers for the first time in years - that should give you guys an idea of how well they are recovering here. I couldn't be happier :)
