There's a short clip of fighting the History Channel usually shows everytime anything is coming on about WWII in the Pacific, they might show it again around December 7th. Part of that clip is of a Japanese plane going right over an aircraft carrier flight deck with it's landing gear down and crashing in the water on the other side has a guy jump up in front of the camera with his arm in the air yelling after the plane missed.
I believe that's what my grandfather told me about when he was on the 2nd Yorktown aircraft carrier during WWII and he said it was filmed. The first Yorktown aircraft carrier was sunk in the battle at Midway.
My grandfather said he saw sun reflecting off them before he saw the planes and he told all the guns to start firing. He said he got in an argument with his c.o. over it, his c.o. said he didn't know if they were jap planes, he told his c.o. he was sure they were jap planes.
One plane got shot down right before reaching the carrier and the other plane dropped it's landing gear instead of it's bomb then went over the top of the flight deck and crashed in the water on the other side.
Afterwards the captain told my grandfather that he needed to wait for orders to fire and that he wasn't going to get a recommendation medal for it because he argued with his co.
Later on a plane did hit the carrier and caused a fire but didn't do much damage. My grandfather said the doctor came out and examined the bodies from the plane and the doctor said the tail gunner was a female.
