The channel depth is probably a very welcome side effect of the storm for the charter captains.

The bridge will probably be closed until they have everyone on the island squared away and are ready to start having visitors. It might be open for limited access (essentials and residents/property owners) once the breaches on 12 are fixed. Still waiting on the temp. bridge for Pea Island from what I've heard. Some of the smaller ones have been filled and NCDOT is working on others.

Is a great site for Hatteras and Ocracoke specific info. Ocracoke is doing ok now , the northern end of Hatteras is the big problem spot. Great articles on Island Free Press now about some of the good things going on at the Rodanthe/waves/salvo community center. Power is back on and ferry service is running for locals - big thing is to get the road fixed and get the mess cleaned up.

I saw something on IslandFreePress.org where you could call some of the Buxton restaurants and donate money for food to be sent to the northern part of the island. Great to see a community that comes together in the face of adversity.

It was pretty serious on the upper end of the island from all reports and it will be a while before it returns to normal. The locals in Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo/Avon and points in between are probably better prepared to recover from it than most. Things are slowly getting better. It's good to see NCDOT working on the roads.

That's my summary - feel free to add to it cause I'm probably leaving some stuff out. I wouldn't expect to be on Hatteras before mid to late October , IF things go as planned.
