I would say if it's not windy and rough you might get by in the sound near the shore on the north side of Oregon Inlet, don't go too far, don't try to cross it, stay away from the bridge area. The current at the bridge is stronger than a small outboard motor. Look for bird activity and the fish finder if you have one.

A better way to go would be renting a boat on a calm day at Fishing Unlimited on the Nags Head Causeway, you have to stay in that area. You might want to try the Miss Oregon Inlet headboat at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center for fishing in the Oregon Inlet area.
