Where/What to fish in Sept/Oct

I have my 3rd annual father/son fishing trip with my son this year. Have not scheduled it. Last 2 years we went to Roanoke River for striper spawn in April/May. Want to do something different. I have a small 14' lightweight boat (can hand launch, but 9.8hp motor-portabote) and want to fish OBX or inland waterway. I would like suggestions on when/where/what to fish (i.e. we want to try red drum or spotted trout, but are open to any med/lg fish).

I want to have some fair amount of catches, keeper or not, and make a memorable trip with my son, as he will be off to college in a few short years. These are the precious times I want him to remember with me. He is not the most patience fisherman, but LOVES when they are biting (don't we all).

Thank you for any input you may have.
