Bit of advice on conventional reels

I've used them for a while. My advice would be to start out with a levelwind. Play with the freespool knob and brakes on it until you are comfortable. I always adjust the freespool knob until it will drop to the ground and stop without the spool over running too much.

If you decide to get a conventional reel , don't fill it too full of line. I've seen people lose big fish because they had too much line on the reel and couldn't get it to lay right when they had a big fish on. It's easy to get it on right sitting at home. When your adrenaline is pumping and your reeling in a big one it's harder.

When you tie a shock leader on a casting reel make sure the knot won't be under your thumb at the start of your cast. I'm right handed , so I like it to the right of my thumb.

Thanks for the rundown on the Emcast. I haven't even used mine yet because it's more of a " loaner "
