A lot of people really like the bloodworm fish-bites. I have mixed feelings. They are really good if a big school of spots is around and you're catching fish two at a time. On a slow day I normally stick with real bloodworms. Shrimp and cut bait are normally my favorite baits and it's hard to beat a spot head if there are big drum around.
Shock leaders should be about twice the length of your rod and at least 3 or 4 wraps around the spool. I normally use 40 or 50 pound mono , but you can get by with 30 if you're not throwing 8 ounces. If you're only using 3 ounces and a bottom rig you might be able to just use the Spider Wire tied directly to the rig , but I would go ahead and use a leader because you may need to use a bigger sinker if the surf picks up.
If you look back over the last few weeks posts on here you'll find a good discussion about knots for shock leaders. I know the Albright Knot works for braided line , not sure about the others.
Hope that helps!
