headed down

First I want to say I hope everyone is safe and things will be getting back to normal for you folks soon.

I'll be headed down there on the 11th for a week and am going to try my hand at surf fishing between Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills. Last year was our first time down and I enjoyed a day on Nags Head Pier.

I guess my question is, are "fish bites" worth investing in or should I just stick to natural bait? Been doing alot of research on reading the beach etc but baits seem to have me confused a bit. 99% or my fishing is freshwater but I love ocean or bay fishing when I get the chance. I have a basic rig of a 9' Penn rod and Shimano reel with 14# spider wire line.

I'd also like your opinion on shock leaders as I've not put that on yet.

Thanks so much in advance for your input. There's nothing like southern folk!
