Lots of choices for bait - bloodworms , shrimp , mole crabs , squid , finger mullet , menhaden etc. I wouldn't buy frozen bait if you can avoid it. My advice is to buy real or imitation bloodworms or fresh shrimp and then use what you catch on those as cut bait.

As far as what you'll catch , it can vary day to day. Spot , croaker , mullet , bluefish , spanish mackerel , red drum , black drum , skates and rays are all possible along with a few I didn't mention. One of the piers would be a good place to learn about targeting certain species and rigging. There would also be people around who could help you identify what you catch - lots of rules and regs for some fish.

Best time of day for me is usually 2 hours before and after high tide. If high tide is at 8 am , I'll try to start around 6 and fish until 10 or later.
