I like sauerkraut if it is fixed right and is really good for you. Try cooking it in a crockpot with a kielbasa sausage cut up in there.
One of my grandmothers was German and her secret was to wash it around about 3 times in a colander then by hand squeeze all the water out.
This gets the funk taste out of the sauerkraut where it's been sitting in the can and had a good one with cored skin on apples in the pan.
Simple, all fried in a little butter some brown sugar on top. I've been trying to cut down the checkout grocery total which keeps going up.
Shopping for eggs lately has been whatever is cheaper in better times my favorite is those brown country eggs, come out ahead with chickens.
If you do chickens I would suggest using heavy duty garden fence, a big loose dog like a boxer will get through chicken wire and kill them.
You can get a box of chicks at Tractor Supply in the spring and usually have different breeds. I would pick the less bossy ones in the pen.
Also if you happen to be at the beach Seagreen Gallery added a good chicken setup in their garden area might be worth checking it out there.

My neighbors were first timers with goats and lost all the babies to heartworm last year it's in the grass need meds and vet said not to cut.
So far I'm not up to doing chickens or goats yet. I am thinking about some honey bees but I have to get them at a certain time during spring.
I might be back at the beach for awhile getting stuff ready, think I am going to get out of there. The northern beaches more now for shopping.
No longer more for old people, surfers and fishermen. As for the debt ceiling drama is time to trim some of the democrat fat off, plenty there.
Here's what will happen to the economy as the debt ceiling drama deepens

(And crockpot potato soup with some diced ham in it for dinner tonight.)
