Capt. Our place is all the way up in carova near the Va/nc border. I usually use cut spot and sea mullet. Whatever I can get off the surf. In October we’ll use cast nets to get finger mullet off the surf or around the Corolla lighthouse. Cut sea mullet and spot is the bait of choice up that way. Finger mullet works better but it’s rarely fresh up that way. I did try some cut spot earlier in the week but the grass was overwhelming. Some guys were using cut bait and catching a lot of rays with cut bait. I did that last year and had to re-spool after they stretched all my line out.

Here’s the week wrap up. Seaweed got completely pushed out by Friday and I put in a full day. First thing in the morning seas were dead calm but so was the fishing. I launched the yak and trolled for a few hours. Managed a one medium sized bluefish. I’ve read that Spanish like a faster troll than blues so I picked up the pace to no avail.
Actually found a bag of bloods so I spent all day picking away at little stuff off the surf. Mostly small sea mullet and pompano. A new first for me is I caught some pin fish and what looked like a small jack. Looked like the ones I catch in Florida like a blue runner with yellow fins. Forget what you call them. All in all not a bad week for late summer. I think I caught one of almost everything possible out of the surf except a striper, ray and a shark. I should be back in early October for the drum if the weather cooperates.

Here’s my PSA for the week.., if you want to go kayaking…. You better know how to re-enter the kayak or don’t bother going. It’s as important as the life jacket. There was this family renting in front of us and had come over to ask advice on launching in the surf. The one gal was pregnant and on the heavy side. Just at first glance she looked to be over the capacity limit for the kayak. I didn’t have the heart to tell her she was too big for the kayak but I also didn’t think she make it out past the breakers. She waded out and tried to jump on and she couldn’t get on so she pulled the kayak closer to the beach a paddled out surprisingly far before rolling over. I debated re-launching and towing her in but she was making back to the beach slowly and She wasn’t screaming and didn’t seem in distress. I figured this would make a nice teachable moment. She seemed in good spirits when she made it back. Could have been much worse.
