When I worked at my last job we used to design these treatment ponds that were prone to get muskrats. We used to put these "monitoring wells" on the pond embankment that were nothing more than about a 24" section of 8" PVC that were installed vertically right at the waters edge with the top of the pipe right at grade. The purpose was that the muskrats would see the hole in the pipe and go down the pipe and couldn't get back up. A few times a year we would go around to all the ponds and pull out the dead muskrats. We had to call them monitoring wells because the environmentalists would have issues with Muskrat Traps.
