To answer your fishing question: In the summer because of all the smaller fish in the surf I typically use #1's, #2'2 and 1/0's for surf high/low rigs for the little guys, but they will also handle something bigger if they come in. I've caught Mullet no longer than 2" on 1/0's that have baited with Blood Worms & Fish Bites.
For my Blue's Rigs I typically use 1/0's & 2/0's and for my fish finder rigs I'll use 6/0's & 8/0's just in case there's a stray Drum out there, but in the Summer they usually get picked up by shark, skate and occasionally Blues.
I bought a bunch of smaller circle hooks to tie my own snelled line on like you're talking about, but then you're using some really thin mono or fluro to tie with and if you do hook up something bigger, they just snap off.
