My gripe was favoritism for Martins Point, Duck, Southern Shores, Town of Manteo at the expense of others if not planning on selling and moving. There can be 3 big taxes depending on where you live. I'll use Kill Devil Hills for example, if you live in Colington it's not part of the town and you only have to pay the standard county tax. Most of the west side of the bypass is in the town and you would have to pay the county tax and the town tax. If you live on the east side of the bypass there you would have to pay the county tax, town tax and a high beach nourishment tax. I think it's 33 cents per $100 for the sand tax in that area. They have not set the tax rate yet but mine has never gone down and they have been spending a lot more than they used to do. One thing I've noticed in the last few years is it seems like they are buying all their employees vehicles to use and not cheap ones either, top of the line heavy duty pickup trucks. Always does do a lot better than the other vehicle in a wreck on the bypass but all I've seen still get totaled. Anyway they really were more thrifty a long time ago which benefited the family owners that were not interested in renting and gave the place its country charm. If your interested in Colington and have retirement money to burn you might love it. I had a relative that had a house on a canal there and he loved it. Then he met a local single mom with a daughter that wanted to live in Wanchese so she could have a horse. So he sold the house for one in Wanchese and got a horse for her. After a year she lost all interest in the horse and he wished he had never left Colington.
