Fishing Rig Question

Ok, I'm looking to purchase my first Baitcaster reel as well as a sturdy rod to mount it on. I've only ever had and used 10' medium action rods and the biggest spinning reel I have is a 8000 series Shimano Bait Runner. Looking for some advise on a set up and what type and size of line I should use for when I'm pier fishing in the Fall for the big drum off the end. Would like to have some time before I go back down to practice and hope to not spend the majority of my trip fixing the birds nest. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
