Lived in inner city in 40's and 50's, till age 14, in grandparents apartment building that also fronted 2 businesses on a main street- dads tavern, and a barber shop.
After snow always the chore of shoveling out for tenants and the businesses. There were no other residences nearby - was a small business area w/ a cemetery (our playground) across the street, w/ the steel mills behind that.
There was lots of snow each winter and evenings turned pink w/ the reflection of the flames from the steel mill stacks.
Snowblowers not invented.
Around 1950 was a really big storm - around 30". All main roads were closed to traffic but buses and emergency vehicles. Was funny because no cars could get to the main roads anyway. Dad and this Capt joined in shoveling closest side street. All side streets had to be done that way - by hand.
And yeah, to put in perspective for you whippersnappers, in those days our milkman's wagon was pulled by a horse!
Simpler times. Better times. Never to be seen again.
