It's happened to me several times just so somebody could save some money, you have a legal right to refuse if it comes to quitting over it.

One was the pier, they wanted me to go under the pier and bolt up a beam with a rope tied around my waist that looked like it was found on the beach.

Early spring ocean temperature, slippery green slime all over everything down there and I said no. :)

A big argument later the manager's son went and only got one bolt in because the drill bit came loose and fell in the ocean.

The beach find didn't break but he got a nice red rope burn around his belly where me and the manager were barely able to pull him back up with it.

And all, the OSHA site below is worth a look and they take it seriously.
