Preferred bait

Heading down Saturday for a week in KDH to do some surf fishing with my son and may get my wife on Avalon Pier.
I've only had luck with cut bait. Have tried sand fleas and blood worms but never tried squid strips except on Miss Oregon Inlet.
Anyone have any suggestions? We're not particular what we catch as we're catch and release folks.
