Pompano are one of my favorites to eat, sometimes they have a nice shellfish flavor and those are the best. Usually those have bellies full of little pieces of black mussel shell. It's funny because it's a shellfish I don't like to eat, too strong a taste for me.

There can be a lot of tiny pompano everywhere up close in the surf during late summer on the clear water days. The best day I had for big pompano catching them one after the other was in a bad rip current you could see the current moving a steady path of muddy water and foam way out beside a pier. It was caused by big swells from a hurricane going by offshore.

Another way to go on a normal day would be to find a really good bowl shaped "trout hole" and fish up close in it. The one that comes and goes beside Kitty Hawk Pier would be an example. Further south on Hatteras Island the ones that come and go at Ramp 27 if it's not a small parking lot.
