I've seen people have good results up close with a light weight version of a fish finder rig with shrimp.

And what Terry said is right.

Warm clear water with some swells coming in is best for targeting pompano.

Also for premade at the tackle shops the pompano rig with the red beads at the bottom of the page below works good.

I compared it with a regular bottom rig on a day they were really chewing and I was catching more with it like two to one.
