No I'm not going shopping with your wife.
Just to change the subject I did figure out what was wrong with my computers, the power supply went bad on one and the other I just took all the cards out and put them back in and it worked. I decided to start to move on and got a new HP 2000 Notebook with the new Windows 8 on it. Both wowed me, the new notebook is a lot lighter and faster than how they used to be and Windows has totally changed it's designed like the smart phones. I'm guessing it's going to be all touch screen one day in the future.
It's not practical to try to upgrade an old computer with a newer operating system needing more memory and such, your better off buying a new computer. Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows XP in April 2014. It's going the way of the dodo bird. :)
Just an FYI on an easy way to salvage your files, take the hard drive out of the old computer and put it in a Hard Drive to USB Enclosure Case. An example below for a 3.5 inch size hard drive like from a tower and has internal connections for either IDE or SATA on the hard drive. They work on the new Windows. You can also switch out the hard drives inside the computers with the newer versions of Windows, works back to Windows XP if it has the last Service Pack 3.
