That's really pretty cool to catch the mahi mahi in close like that , even if it was just a couple of strays. You just never know what's going to happen when you fish in salt water.
Supposedly the bottlenose and other dolphins are smart enough or can see well enough to not get caught on rod and reel , but I'm sure it happens occasionally. That's what I've heard anyway , but I don't know how true it is. I'd feel bad if I hooked Flipper.
I was at the VA beach pier a few years back when they were building a sewer pipe or something about 100 yards north of the pier. A big pod of some type of dolphin chased a school of big spot into the area between the pier and the construction stuff and just went crazy. They were jumping 5-6 feet out of the water and crashing on the spots. They got wild enough that the guys on the rig pulled their divers up until the rampage was over. Pretty awesome to see.
I've also seen Flippers playing in the surf in close a bunch of times. Like surfers without boards. Gotta love the ocean.
