around here i mostly fished the north fork of the shenandoah river and mountain trout streams. i was taught to tie on a long shank hook and put a split shot about 12 inches above it, according to the water flow. sometimes if water slow no shot at all, just hook and bait. surf fishing at the banks i always hated the bottom rigs because they would get all tangled up around my rod. so after a few turkey and cokes one day i got the bright idea to make my own single hook rig. i had some 15 lb. test line, tied a hook on it and made a loop at top. i like them about 16 inches and hook to swivel. i like a barrel weight just big enough to barely hold. just slip the weight on the line and then tie swivel on and then attach leader and hook. i was catching kingfish about every cast. King told me about a rig that you could buy like that. i think i bought one but i can't find it. anyway that's what Turkey and Coke will get ya!! have a good vacation. btw, i think when the fish picks up the bait there is not much resistance.
