It's a big college town, Appalachian State University so part of it is brick college buildings with stores and shops built up around it.

If your going the usual way 421 through Wilkesboro once you get to Boone you will hit a bunch of stoplights and will be in heavy traffic.

I look for an odd brick 2 story Wendy's on the corner of the road where I turn, downtown might be worth seeing the shops, college ladies.

(Meaning you might see some sights, women holding hands.)

The last time I went 64 to 321 through Lenoir to Blowing Rock and that put me where I wanted on roads so could go that way coming from 40.

I doubt you make it early enough Saturday but I like to go to the small farmers’ market and has local mountain grown food and other stuff.

I like the Come Back Shack's fried green tomato burger and they have good fries, there's finer dining .......

If you like gem mining places, Foggy Mountain does the best job on rings and Docs is all from NC in buckets, NC black sapphire.

You would like Blowing Rock and their downtown is really fixed up nice but the best is the blowing rock .......

Also a good spot to get on the parkway has little lakes, overviews, campgrounds not many bicycles on the road.

Something else I've been wanting to go on but the crowd is always big parking lot full so it's maybe next time.

And this store is a hard to find must stop there and the hot dog food truck if it is around, watch out messy.

Didn't go in the downtown store, 2 more one is a general store with everything other more old time candy shop.

I'd suggest timing the trip with either the Wilkesboro or Taylorsville apple festivals in October both are big.
